On the side, baked potato with some sour cream and beans with butter. The weekend is here at last!

Mush
Not sure what you'd call this. We had some leftover emergency camping rations in the form of KD boxes. That was the foundation for this dinner. It came together well and tasted better then you'd think. The white cheese and creme fraiche combo didn't hurt either. I guess you can never judge a box by it's cover.

Ham
Ham with some mashed potatoes/carrots and buttered cauliflower on the side. A simple meal that filled the gap.

Pork & Beans
Camping is the one time using a can actually makes sense and helps stretch food a week or two without buying ice and fresh meat etc every 5 days. These pork and beans from a can are combined with some leftover wieners from the hot dogs we had a few days before this. This made for a quick and hearty lunch.

Tacos & Camping
They seem to go together really well. A few weeks ago on another camping trip I'd posted pictures of steak wraps we'd made and mentioned that next time we'd be doing tacos because bread tends to go bad quickly and taco shells and nachos don't. This is the next evolutionary step. We were amazed just how simple tacos were while camping and this is a now a new addition to our camping staple foods like burgers and steak.
The people that make those often used canning jars "Ball" now make hard plastic ones that seal water tight with threaded lids. Normally we avoid plastic and we never heat food in anything that isn't straight glass or porcelain etc. These BALL "jars" will never be heated though but instead used for storing and freezing. They worked amazingly well for camping. Everything stayed fresh and dry in these for an entire week. They are another new camping staple now.

Steak
Cooking with coal and the hibachi is a whole lot easier now that we use one of these coal starters. Not that it was difficult before but it's completely painless now. We used the leftover coals after cooking to boil water for the dishes and then as a base for a camp fire. Words can't describe how good this marinated steak was.

Hot Dogs
The coals don't always have to be fired up, especially for something this simple. Slightly burnt but good and plain hot dogs!

Camp Cooking
Here comes more food pictures from this past camping trip along with more steady blog posting as summer winds down again. An obligatory ocean picture from the island will start things off.

Steak & Potatoes
A pretty standard combination. Steak, potatoes and corn being the holy trinity of a typical steak dinner. Normally a baked potato but for today it was mashed potatoes with garlic and peaches and cream corn. There won't be any more posts in here for a week or so while camping but plenty of fun pictures thereafter.

Meatball Soup
When making today's post I kept having sayings going through my mind like "it's the soup that eats like a meal" or "it's mmm mmm good" or you need a fork not a spoon etc but realized these are all probably trademarked quotes pounded into my brain over the years as a youth absorbing advertising slogans without even realizing it. It was NONE of those things. It WAS a thick homemade meatball soup that beat ALL of those things hands down. In our opinion at least. Enjoy!

Gnocchi & Salad
The title doesn't even begin to really describe this meal but maybe the pictures will do a better job. A lot of fresh leek, mushroom, celery, peppers, garlic, tomatoes, and Italian sausage went into this meal. The salad is kept very plain with a simple oil and vinegar dressing.
