Today's Tidbit

On this day in 1966 The Monkees began filming for it's TV series. It subsequently began airing from September 1966 to March 1968. I grew up watching The Monkees in reruns along with the Banana Splits and Ultra Man to name a few.

Here is a link to that very first episode released Sept 12th 1966. It's in two parts so make sure to watch the second video as well. I will also post "I'm a believer" which arrived in December of 1966.

Roast Beef

Probably a pretty traditional Canadian dish. Especially on a Sunday, delicious either way. The pictures really do speak for themselves. Ground black pepper and garlic get used in almost every dish around here.

Today's Tidbit

There were a lot more popular song choices in history to pick from today but I can appreciate the more obscure ones too. On this day in 1982 Paul McCartney reached and then held No.1 on the US singles chart for three weeks with "Tug of War". Simply titled "Paul McCartney" this was Paul's first official solo album after disbanding The Wings a year earlier and was also the first since John Lennon's death.

Today's Tidbit

On this day back in 1973 The Edgar Winter Group, led by the albino multi-instrumentalist Edgar Winter, were No.1 on the US singles chart with "Frankenstein". If you get a chance you should check out this self proclaimed scientologist's fellow albino and brother Johnny Winter & the psychedelic blues experiment. At the time of this posting I could find no reference to that in Google or YouTube, ouch! That makes me feel old just for knowing about it.

Today's Tidbit

Here are a few pictures from an outing today to scope out where we'll be camping this summer. Getting the lay of the land so to speak.. I'll let you guess where these pictures are from rather then name the place but it's a divers paradise. Either way it's beautiful and less then an hour from the city. It'll be nice to camp close to home for a change. Those 5-6 hour drives get less and less appealing with locations like this so close to home, waiting to be explored.

The view from the campsite is heavenly.

This following track might be a brown bears, the nails aren't long enough for black bear tracks.

This Birds nest had two red flowers growing out of it. Impressive building job.

This is as much sun as we could be find today.

Today's Tidbit

On this day in 1976 The Wings reached No.1 on the US singles chart with "Silly Love Songs". It stayed at the top of the charts for a solid five weeks and along with other Wings songs it's still a part of my music collection.

Chicken Stir-Fry with Cranberries

I never would have thought dried cranberries in a stir fry would taste this good but it was so surprisingly good.  I can' t wait until we do this with leftover turkey one day.

Today's Tidbit

It's Friday, Friday. Gotta get down on Fri. . . .  NO!!!

Actually it is Friday just not THAT kind of Friday!

On this day back in 1967 The Young Rascals were No.1 on the US singles chart with "Groovin". It was actually a Saturday in 1967 so were kicking off this weekend early so to speak. See what I did there?

Whether you're "groovin' on a Sunday afternoon" or you "gotta get down on Friday" enjoy your weekend and if you're Canadian enjoy one less "Manic Monday" compliments of Queen Victoria.

Today's Tidbit

Tiny Tim released "Tiptoe through the Tulips" on this day in 1968. I never personally understood Tiny Tim and still don't but what I find was significant was that he was only doing a cover for a song that already existed when Nick Lucas had written and performed it in 1929. It actually was No.1 on the charts in 1929 for 10 weeks!  That original performance was in the movie "Gold Diggers of Broadway" which was the official second all color/all talking movie ever made. I think I just took a Tiny Tim song and found relevancy I didn't know existed. Considering the size of the moon in this following excerpt it could have as easily been "Tiptoe in the Moonlight" Enjoy!

Salad

I won't even try to name this salad since pretty much all salad rules were broken. Walnuts with feta and apple. Can't say I've ever seen those three together in one salad. It was topped with a simple oil, vinegar, black pepper, walnut oil and lemon juice dressing. We tried to use walnuts and walnut oil for protein instead of chicken or beef. I don't think my body could tell the difference although if anything the walnuts were more fattening.

Today's Tidbit

It was on this day back in 1970 the very influential Crosby Stills Nash & Young reached No.1 on the US album charts with "Deja Vu". This album was a keynote of the times. Profound music that although timeless in itself contains lyrics that are very distinctively 1970. It didn't get much better then this.

Today's Tidbit

My Tidbit post for yesterday was eaten when blogger went to a previous version after maintenance issues. Anybody posting after a certain hour lost their post. It would have been about Jefferson Starship so another time then.

Instead, on this day in 1966 The kinks recorded "Sunny Afternoon". Here's the video for that song.

Fish & Chips

Nothing too fancy here. Frozen Beer battered halibut with steak fries and a little whole wheat fish sandwich with tomato and cheese.

I'm usually not one to eat preprepared things but it sometimes happens when times tight. I am not a big fan of fish period and definitely not when it's stinking up the kitchen and pans and dishwasher etc. If my wife wants fish it usually happens outside the home or something like this that isn't going to stink the place up so much.

Today's Tidbit

Were going to a later date for today's tidbit but for a song that bears [yes I consulted the grammar police before spelling bears that way] mentioning.

1986 was a year I remember well for various reasons and today is the day that year that The Pet Shop Boys were No.1 on the US singles chart with their first US No.1 single "West End Girls". This song had to evolve a couple of years before it reached that status. Enjoy!

Cheeseburgers

With sharp cheddar, tomatoes, onions and FREE ketchup. Sided up with some very lightly salted steak fries, vinegar and more free ketchup. Jaw numbingly thick meat patty's to quench any hunger.

Slow food beats fast food every single time. Them free ketchup packets came in handy though.

Today's Tidbit

It was on this day in 1976 the former lead singer, John Sebastion of The Loving Spoonful, went to No.1 on the US singles chart with "Welcome Back" which was written for the TV show "Welcome Back Kotter". These days Gabe Kaplan who played the role of "Kotter" is a professional poker player and John Travolta is a pretty huge star. Makes you wonder where Kotter's wife from that series and horshack etc have all gone. Maybe that will come up on another Tidbit day.

Pork Cutlet Sandwich

With melted cheddar on a whole wheat bun. Very simple and actually quite low calorie. Were not exactly covering all the food groups this time but they sure made for a light and tasty dinner.
